Serious times require serious leaders

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his entourage of cabinet ministers and photographers have returned from their week-long European vacation and photo-op tour.

What was accomplished? Well, nothing discernible. He certainly isn’t leading in these troubled times. And neither, for that matter, is the President of the United States, Joe Biden.

The war in Ukraine rages on and the west is being implored by Ukrainian President Zalensky to establish a “no fly” zone over the Ukraine. They have also asked for planes (Mig 29s) from Poland, a member nation of NATO which has the planes Ukranian fighter pilots are familiar with. Thus far NATO has not responded as a group, but the message from the White House is that the west doesn’t want to do anything that might escalate into World War III.

According to President Biden, a a couple of dozen fighters from Poland would be seen as “escalatory.” Although the U.S., Canada and a dozen other countries are supplying the Ukraine with weapons of war including Stinger anti-air missiles and Javelin anti-tank missiles. What the difference is between land-launched weapons of war and air-launched weapons of war is not clear to this observer.

There are so many things going on in the world that potentially impacts the national security of the west in general, but Canada and the U.S. in particular.

Yet, last week Biden held a national security video conference between major NATO members which included the U.K., France and Germany. Canada? Um, not so much. Trudeau was not invited. Even the cognitively challenged Joe Biden didn’t think Canada / Trudeau had anything to add to a serious discussion about what to do about the Russian invasion of the Ukraine.

In the last 24 hours, in addition to the Russian escalation in the Ukraine, Iran fired several missiles at a U.S. consulate / military compound in Erbil, Iraq, China amid their airborne incursions into Taiwanese airspace said that no nation should consider offering any military support to Taiwan. This would seem to indicate a Chinese invasion of Taiwan is imminent. And, as an extra added attraction, North Korea fired several ballistic test missies into the Sea of Japan.

In the normal course of events, the U.S. President would activate the Situation Room to determine the American response, if any, to any one of these incidents. This meeting would typically include senior cabinet members including the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of State. Also present in meetings of this sort would be the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, the National Security Advisor and the Director of National Intelligence. This collection of events is unprecedented. And yet, there is no indication from the White House that this has occurred.

This is frightening stuff and, as the Leader of the Free World, President Joe Biden seems missing in action. And perhaps, that’s exactly why the world’s bad actors are all doing what they are now doing.

With the world’s attention focussed on the Russian’s unprecedented invasion of a neighbouring country and an obviously weak leader in the White House, we now see North Korea, Iran and China now engaging in activities that in the normal course of events would elicit an American response.

But now, nothing, at least as far as we can tell.

In fact the White House has announced that the President on Monday. would be attending a DNC fundraiser. Meanwhile Ukraine burns. Women and children are being slaughtered in indiscriminate Russian attacks. And Trudeau? Well, he released a video of himself on his European vacation.

And all the while the world is facing a refugee crisis like we haven’t seen since WWII. More than two million people have fled their war torn country in the Ukraine and are flooding into neighbouring countries.

We need serious leaders at this serious time in history. But we have a U.S. President who seems affected by a cognitive dissonance brought on by advancing years. And in Canada, our Prime Minister was busy flouncing around Europe on what some have described as a war-cation.

Serious times require serious leaders. But with Biden and Trudeau we have the equivalent of the blind leading the deaf.
