Standards used to assign capacity figures vary across jurisdictions.

The use of bed-space for special or normal purposes is flexible, depending on operational need.

For this reason, special purpose bed-space may be covered in the total operational capacity, as with the following jurisdictions.  Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan, and Yukon.

Ontario: The increase in the total operational bed capacity in 2001/02 is due to the opening of mega institutions.

Average Daily Cost of Offenders in Provincial Custody, 1999/00 to 2001/02

Source: Statistics Canada – Catalogue no 85-211 Page 17

‘Total Days stay’ is based on average daily (actual-in) counts of inmates as multiplied by the number of days in the year.

British Columbia’s average daily inmate cost was $48.81 per day above Canada’s national average.

If BC’s average daily inmate cost matched Canada’s national average it would mean a savings of $39.2 million annually.  ($48.81 per day multiplied by 803,548 total days stay)

It cost $87.23 less a day to house a provincial prisoner in an Alberta prison compared to British Columbia.

$44.09 less a day in Ontario     $64.77 less a day in Quebec
