Teen makes surprise guilty plea

MONTREAL - A serial rapist apologized in Youth Court yesterday to the women he sexually assaulted and their families, saying he was sorry for the hurt he had caused.  In all, the 18-year-old man was accused of sexually assaulting 11 women.  His name cannot be published because he was a minor when he committed the crimes. (Montreal Gazette)

 

Accused kills himself

ST. JOHN’S - A man who was to stand trial Tuesday in St. John's on kidnapping and sexual assault charges has killed himself.  Darren Joseph Fagan, 37, was found dead at Her Majesty's Penitentiary, in the east end of St. John's.  (CBC)

 

We've lost track of sex offenders

VANCOUVER - The case of Steven James Petiquan illustrates just a few of the reasons why Canada's sex offender registry has been called everything from "useless" to "a sham."  Last summer, the convicted sex offender from Abbotsford decided to take a trip to Calgary.  Petiquan, 31, didn't tell authorities about it. The law says he doesn't have to for trips of less than two weeks.  (Vancouver Province)

 

Ex-con charged with assault

CALGARY - A man who was convicted of sexually assaulting a woman at a tanning salon in 2002 has been charged with an eerily similar crime.  Marcel Joseph Parent, 30, has been charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, sexual assault with a weapon, robbery and unlawful confinement after a woman was attacked at knifepoint at a northwest Calgary tanning salon.  (Calgary Herald)

Man serving time for gang rape is set free early

MONTREAL - A man sentenced to four years and two months in prison after the 2005 gang rape of a 14-year-old girl in a St. Michel park is free to walk this city's streets this morning.  Guards ushered Andy Virgile, 21, out of the Montreal Detention Centre late Thursday, after the Quebec Court of Appeal ordered his immediate release. MONTREAL - A woman who was sexually abused for years by her mother's boyfriend is suing the man for $600,000 in damages after the criminal courts handed him a conditional sentence.   (Montreal Gazette)

CALGARY -  Keegan Troy Spearchief, 22, was released from jail after serving four years for multiple violent sexual assaults and break and enter, prompting police to issue a warning to women.  (Calgary Herald)  

 

Nunatsiavut president charged

Police have charged the president of the self-governed Inuit region of Nunatsiavut in Labrador with sexual assault.  William Andersen III took a paid leave of absence in November from his role as president of the Nunatsiavut Assembly.  At the time, he cited personal reasons for the leave. OTTAWA - This fall, a Carleton University graduate student needed to clear the record. Widely published reports had described how a man entered the science lab where she was working late one night, snapped her jaw, removed her clothes and sexually assaulted her. Several stories incorrectly claimed she was raped.  Concerned that the word might stigmatize her and hinder her chances of marriage, the 23-year-old Muslim let it be known that there was no penetration during this brutal incident. Offender off national registry

NANAIMO - A former Vancouver Island doctor who served a four-year jail term for sexually assaulting patients has had his name removed from the national sex offender registry.  The 63-year-old man, identified only as "S", successfully argued in BC Supreme Court that keeping his name on the registry for the minimum 20-year period is a significant violation of his privacy. Getting away with murder

They call it femicide.  "It's the fashion here to murder women," says a man in Killer's Paradise.  More than 600 Guatemalan women a year are murdered.
