Sexual assault charges

TORONTO - A former Scout leader and school teacher is facing numerous sexual assault charges involving young boys.  Toronto police said the alleged victims were between the ages of 11 and 15. VERNON - Elementary school teacher Deborah Ashton has been found not guilty of sexually assaulting one of her young students.  The 47-year-old was also acquitted on a charge of sexual interference with a person under the age of 14 Wednesday in BC Supreme Court.  A previous trial for Ashton ended a year ago when jurors were unable to reach a verdict.  (CTV)

Retired teacher charged

TORONTO - An 85-year-old retired school teacher has been charged in connection to a sexual assault investigation dating back 50 years, and police fear there could be more potential victims.  Toronto police allege the suspect befriended a seven-year-old boy and sexually abused the victim for several years.  Alec Owen, 85, of Toronto, has been charged with two counts of indecent assault on a male.  (CTV)

Guilty plea

Teen charged

ROSSLAND - A 17-year-old is facing 47 charges, including numerous sexual offences and child luring.  The youth, who can’t be named because of his age, is accused of using social media to contact children aged 10 to 14 to have them perform sexual acts over their web cameras and arrange face-to-face meetings with them.  Police have currently identified 20 children were involved.  (QMI)

 

 

Mom jailed

TORONTO - A mother who exposed two known child molesters to her 10-year-old daughter for their perverse sexual gratification was sentenced Tuesday to 6 1/2 years in jail. "This was a case like no other," Justice Gary Trotter said in passing sentence on the now 61-year-old first offender, who adopted the 18-month-old girl from Romania in 1997.  Last June a jury found the mother enabled convicted pedophile Randolph "Randie" Bartley, 54, to babysit her daughter between Feb 1, 2005, and Aug 21, 2006.  (QMI)

VAUGHAN - 60 people, including 3 teenagers, face child pornography charges in what the OPP said is the largest bust of its kind in Canadian history.  The OPP said Thursday more than 200 charges were laid against the suspects from across the province. EDMONTON - A local man admitted Tuesday to having sex with his own children and the daughters of two girlfriends and using a whip and a dog in his twisted crimes.  The 41-year-old man - who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victims - pleaded guilty to 8 counts of sexual interference, 8 counts of inviting sexual touching, 4 counts of child pornography, 2 counts of incest, unlawful confinement, attempted counselling of sexual interference, administering a stupefying drug, bestiality and using a whip in a sexual assault.  (QMI) 

 

 

Teacher sentenced

TORONTO - A Toronto public school teacher has been sentenced to nearly four and a half years in prison on charges related to child pornography.  However, with credit for time already served, Stewart Adams will spend less than two years in jail.  Adams plead guilty to possessing, distributing and accessing child porn.  (CityNews)

HALIFAX - A Cape Breton man convicted of sexually abusing boys decades ago has been acquitted of all of the charges against him because of the long delay in bringing him to trial, a judge ruled Thursday.  The Nova Scotia Court of Appeal found that Ernest Fenwick MacIntosh was not brought to trial in a reasonable time after he was extradited from India in 2007 to face the charges that surfaced in 1995 and dated back to the 1970s.  (CP)

LAC LA BICHE - After an investigation in the US lead investigators to his doorstep, a Lac La Biche man is facing charges of child pornography.  ALERT's ICE unit has charged 62-year-old Daniel Quiring Stoesz with possessing child pornography, and making it available.  After some investigation, the ICE unit found the accused is employed by the Government of Alberta, as a foster care supervisor in the Lac La Biche area.  (CTV)

Abuse arrest

VANCOUVER - A man who worked at an Indian residential school in northern Saskatchewan is charged with abusing boys at that institution.  Paul Leroux was a dormitory supervisor at the Beauval Indian Residential School in the 1960s.  He's accused of indecent assaults against 13 boys who attended the school at that time, the RCMP said.  The victims were between 3 and 18 years old at the time.  (CBC)

   

Girl kept rapes secret

CALGARY - Repeatedly raping his daughter - a crime kept secret because the girl didn't want her little brother to lose his dad - has landed a Calgary man a 6-year prison term.  Justice Peter Clark accepted a joint Crown and defence submission which spared the victim having to testify against her father. The father, 35, pleaded guilty last Oct 25 to incest for sexually abusing his daughter from the time she was 7 or 8, until she disclosed it when she was 11.  (QMI)

Teacher guilty

VANCOUVER - A former acting teacher at BC's Capilano College has been found guilty of multiple sex offences involving children.  Michael Berry was convicted in BC Supreme Court in Vancouver on 13 sex-related charges dating back to the late 1970s and early 1980s.  The court was told the West Vancouver man befriended girls between the ages of 7 and 13. OTTAWA - An Orléans man pleaded guilty to possessing and distributing child pornography.  Gilles Simard, 56, admitted to possessing 24,640 child exploitation movies along with 5,532 pictures of child pornography. Some of the videos included infants being sexually abused.  (Ottawa Citizen)

CALGARY - A Calgary man has been charged with making and distributing child pornography.  The Southern Alberta Internet Child Exploitation Unit was involved in an undercover operation led by the FBI.  Roderick "Kyle" Janssen, 35, has been charged with possession of child pornography, accessing child pornography, making child pornography, and distributing child pornography.  Additional charges are pending.   (CTV)

   

Woman sentenced

BELLEVILLE - A southeastern Ontario woman was handed a two-year sentence for child pornography offences involving her infant daughter.  The woman pleaded guilty on March 1 to sexual interference and producing child porn.  Police allege thousands of pictures of an 11-month-old girl were found on the child's father's cellphone after he lost it last August.  The 24-year-old father, who also lives near Belleville, received a six-year prison sentence in February.  (CP)

   

Clown pleads guilty

KINGSTON - A Napanee man who worked as a clown pleaded guilty to child pornography charges.  Randy Miller, 40, pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of child pornography, one count of making child pornography available, and one count of sexual assault involving a minor.  He was arrested last October as part of an international police sting called Project Sanctuary.  Police found about 60,000 pornographic images of children on his computers.  (CityNews)   MORE:  Guilty plea

'World's largest paedophile ring'

HAGUE - International police led by a UK team say they shut down the largest internet paedophile ring yet discovered.  The global forum had 70,000 followers at its height, leading to 4,000 intelligence reports being sent to police across 30 countries.  The operation has so far identified 670 suspects and 230 abused children.  Detectives say 184 people have been arrested - 121 of them were in the UK. OTTAWA - He slept with the 14-year-old girl, groomed her 11-year-old sister for sex play and used violence and threats to keep them in line.  On Friday, a judge sentenced Collin Robinson, 33, to 6 1/2 years in prison.  That's on top of a 10-month sentence he received for sexually interfering with their 4-year-old sister while he dated their mother.   (QMI)

LADYSMITH - RCMP say they are overwhelmed by the discovery of about 1M pictures of child pornography found on the computers of a Ladysmith, BC, man.  The 64-year-old was arrested after police executed search warrants at his business, in his car and at his home in the Vancouver Island community.  Officers seized 10 computers and several digital cameras, web cameras, DVDs and 29 hard drives, all containing sexually explicit images of minors.  (CBC)

EDMONTON - The mother of a young Edmonton girl abducted and raped by a pedophile with a long history of attacking children has launched a $1M lawsuit against authorities.  The statement of claim, filed in court Monday, alleges the Edmonton Police Service, the Correctional Service of Canada, the National Parole Board, the Minister of Public Safety and the Attorney General of Canada are responsible for the attack by sexual predator Danial Gratton. WINNIPEG - A Winnipeg man, convicted 5 times of molesting children, has been ordered deported to his native Philippines.  Josefino Abelada, 49, had most recently pled guilty to two counts of sexual interference and one count of breaching a probation order.  He was sentenced Tuesday to 22 months in jail.  (QMI)

Child porn conviction reversed

VANCOUVER - The BC Court of Appeal has acquitted former Victoria youth prosecutor Roger Denley of accessing and possessing child pornography.  Denley had been found guilty in October 2008 of accessing and possessing child porn on his home computer between Nov. 1, 2003, and Aug. 30, 2004.  The appeal court concluded that a computer automatically saving images was not sufficient to constitute possession.  The trial judge also found the former prosecutor had not intentionally saved any of the images, which were saved as a result of browsing. The images on the hard drive were not accessible to the ordinary user without special software. There was no evidence they were available for use or viewing by Denley.  (Victoria Times Colonist)

   

Santa busted for child porn

BARRIE - A Barrie Ont., man who played the role of Santa in the city’s annual Christmas parades was sent to jail yesterday for possession of thousands of images and movies of child pornography.  Daniel Gyselinck, 58, stood in the prisoner’s box with a snowy white beard and long white hair and was taken away in handcuffs after pleading guilty to possession of child pornography as well as making child pornography after he copied it from Limewire onto thousands of CDs.   (QMI)

VANCOUVER - Tim Bachman, one of the founding members of the 1970s Canadian rock band Bachman-Turner Overdrive, has been charged with three sex-related crimes involving a minor.  The charges against Bachman include one count of sexual touching, one count of sexual interference and one count of sexual assault, all involving the same female, who police say was 11 when the crimes started.  The charges relate to incidents that are alleged to have occurred in Abbotsford between June 2000 and April 2004.  (CBC)   Tim Bachman

VICTORIA - A Saanich man, who fled to Britain in an attempt to avoid serious child sex- abuse charges, was extradited back to Canada after a months-long international hunt.  John Cox, 34, was arrested on May 5 in Kent, England, nearly four months after he failed to show up for his mid-February trial at the provincial court house in Victoria.  He is charged with nine child sex offences, including sexual assault and sexual interference against a child.  (Victoria Times Colonist)

KINGSTON - A man involved with an Ottawa church who was convicted in the past of assaulting more than one dozen choir boys in the Kingston area is charged with another historical sexual assault in Kingston.  Police charged John Gallienne, 65, with indecent assault. Investigators say the allegations against Gallienne date back to 1980.   Gallienne is a former Anglican choirmaster in Kingston, who pleaded guilty to 20 sex crimes against young boys between 1975 and 1990. He was also convicted of three more sex charges involving another boy in 1992.   (CTV)

TORONTO - A man accused of trying to buy a child online allegedly offered to pay generously for one as “young as possible” during an Internet chat presented as evidence at his detention hearing.  Patrick Molesti, a French fugitive who fled the US for Canada to escape child exploitation charges, was ordered to remain in the northwestern Ontario jail where he’s been held. Court overturns conviction

OTTAWA - The Supreme Court of Canada has overturned the child pornography conviction of a Saskatchewan man, after agreeing his rights were violated by an unreasonable search of his home computer.  Urbain P. Morelli claimed his charter rights were violated because his computer was searched by police after a visiting computer technician noticed two suspicious links on his home computer.  In a split, 4-3 decision, the high court acquitted Morelli after ruling police relied on a "carelessly drafted" and "misleading" search warrant.   (CP)  JUDGMENT:  2010 SCC 8

EDMONTON - Police are searching for a 54-year-old man in connection with the sexual assault of a child northwest of Rocky Mountain House.  RCMP officers were called to a home on the Sunchild First Nations Reserve and were told a young child who lived at the home had allegedly been sexually assaulted by a family friend living at the house. WINDSOR - A judge in Windsor, Ont., is deciding how to sentence a woman who repeatedly sexually assaulted her two-year-old son while live-streaming the acts on the internet.  The woman, who is from Lakeshore, Ont., on Lake St. Clair, was facing 12 charges, but pleaded guilty to five of them, including sexual assault, making child pornography and possessing child pornography. CALGARY - A city man has been sentenced to 81/2 years in prison for sexually abusing at least five girls in Calgary and BC.  Provincial court Judge Bruce Millar imposed the sentence on Theodore Raymond Edward Morgan, 46, who had previously pleaded guilty to 17 charges relating to incidents in 2001, 2005 and 2006.  Morgan pleaded guilty to several counts of sexual assault, sexual touching and uttering death threats to eight-and nine-year-old girls in homes here and in Mission, BC.  (Calgary Herald)

REGINA - RCMP investigators are looking into the possibility more victims may be identified after announcing that dozens of sexual assault charges have been laid against Ronald Anthony Sawa, a former employee of the Saskatchewan Boys Centre - now known as the Paul Dojack Youth Centre.  Sawa, 58, was arrested by the RCMP Friday morning at his Regina home and taken into custody after a four-year investigation resulting in 39 counts of sexual assault involving 18 complainants.  (Regina Leader Post)

TURNER VALLEY - A host of child pornography-related charges have been laid against an employee at a school on a native reserve south of Calgary.  Turner Valley RCMP launched an investigation on June 13, after "questionable" photos were found near a printer, at Eden Valley School.  Mounties then searched a home on the reserve, finding further evidence of child exploitation crimes.  On June 20, police arrested Leon Rider, a 42-year-old man from the Eden Valley Reserve.  (Calgary Herald)

   

Belgian pleads guilty

SASKATOON - An international child pornography investigation with tentacles all over the world reached Saskatoon last week with the arrest of a local man on a single charge of possessing images of child abuse.  Malcolm John Rollins, 52, made his first appearance before a judge in provincial court.  The charge stems from information provided to city police by investigators working on Operation Koala, a massive effort that began in Australia in 2006.  (Saskatoon Star Phoenix)

   

Ex-teacher gets 25 months

HALIFAX - A former Langley teacher who sexually assaulted five of his students has been sentenced to 25 months in prison for sexually assaulting an eight-year-old boy in Halifax.  Roger Edouard Mercier, 39, struck up a relationship with the boy's mother and began preying on the youngster.  (Vancouver Province)

   

Pedophile freed

OTTAWA - A pedophile considered at high risk to reoffend is free after the Supreme Court of Canada Thursday overturned his latest convictions for sexually abusing children.  Dieter Helmut Wittwer, 74, from the Kelowna area, was convicted by lower courts in 2005 of molesting three kids, and received a two-year jail sentence and 10 years' probation. Child porn fighter or user?

TORONTO - For Brian Brown, "the world crashed" when he was arrested on charges of child porn - the very crime he says he was trying to fight.  The computer expert claims he was volunteering with the Toronto police to develop software aimed at combating child porn online.  But officers with the OPP and York Region police paint a more sinister picture of the Richmond Hill man.  They say they found pornographic images of children on his home computer and that he was distributing them.  (Toronto Star)

   

Weekends in jail

VANCOUVER - A Chilliwack physiotherapist caught in an international child pornography sting was sentenced to 60 days in jail to be served on weekends.  Laurence Wong, who pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography after police found 26,000 illegal images on his computer and several hundred child porn videos, will serve the 60 days on Friday through Sunday.  (Vancouver Province)

   

Man admits to child abuse, bestiality

CALGARY - The Crown is looking at having a former city man declared a long-term offender or dangerous offender after he admitted to sexually abusing an eight-year-old girl, bestiality and possessing child pornography.  Gary Wayne Todd, 53, who entered the courtroom in a wheelchair, pleaded guilty through defence lawyer Mark Gottlieb on Monday to charges relating to all three sets of allegations.  (Calgary Herald)

Online sex predator jailed for 3 years

Child porn detainee jailed 6 months

CALGARY - A father has admitted he repeatedly sexually abused and took degrading pornographic pictures of his young daughter over a three-year period.  The 36-year-old man, who cannot be named in order to protect his daughter's identity, began the abuse when he slapped her in the head and pushed her into walls when she was 10, then sexually assaulted her as often as four times a month when she was 11 and 12.  (Calgary Herald)

   

Man pleads guilty

VANCOUVER - A former BC lawyer with a long history of involvement with children's groups has pleaded guilty to six sexual offences against kids dating back to the 1970s.  Gordon Hazlewood, 73, of Abbotsford, pleaded guilty in North Vancouver Provincial Court to four charges of gross indecency and two charges of indecent assault against boys, who were all under 14 at the time of the offences.  The charges date back to events that happened between August 1969 and November 1977.  (North Shore News)

Child rapist convicted

DRUMHELLER, AB - A judge in Drumheller handed a man a nine-month sentence Friday for molesting three young boys.  The offender, who was 17 when he committed the crimes, will spend the first six months in closed custody and the remaining third of his sentence in the community under supervision.  (Calgary Herald)

   

Man drugged, sexually assaulted me, girl says on tape

VERNON - It was supposed to be a quick trip to a local video store, but on her way home an 11-year-old girl was abducted, drugged and repeatedly sexually assaulted before being released 36 hours later.  Yesterday, for the first time since her abduction in 2006, she told her story publicly -- in the form of a videotaped police interview conducted shortly after she was found.  The tape was played in BC Supreme Court during the trial for Paul Robert Lepage, 56, who's charged with aggravated sexual assault, kidnapping and administering a drug to commit an indictable offence.  (CanWest)

13-year-old charged

RED DEER - A 13-year-old boy has been charged after a younger boy was sexually assaulted on a toboggan hill in Red Deer, Alta., police said.  The RCMP said they arrested the teen, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, on Wednesday and charged him with one count of sexual assault in the case involving the six-year-old.  (CBC)

   

'Deep breach of trust'

PEMBROKE - A prominent Ottawa Valley priest whose service to the Catholic Church was rewarded with a Vatican post was sentenced to four years in prison yesterday for sexually molesting 13 young boys.  Reading from a handwritten statement, Msgr. Bernard Prince, 72, showed no emotion as he apologized to his victims for his "legal and moral" wrongdoing after being found guilty of one charge of indecent assault and pleading guilty to 12 more charges of indecent and sexual assault. Suspect in 1979 BC rape returned

Salvation Army on hook for sex abuse: court

The Salvation Army is responsible for sexual abuse committed by one of its officers, a Newfoundland Supreme Court judge has ruled.  Gerald Fifield, now 64, has admitted he used pornography to convince a then nine-year-old boy that sex between adults and children is acceptable.  The abuse started in the 1970s, after Fifield was posted in a small Newfoundland community.  (CBC)

Police shifting through wave of new tips
