SAINT JOHN - A NB police officer is suspected of sexually abusing at least 260 children over the course of nearly three decades dating back to the late 1950s.  After decades of secrecy, private investigators and Saint John, NB officials say that a lone police officer, Sgt. FORT MCMURRAY - ALERT said Russell Hancock, 35, was arrested April 18.  Investigators said Hancock was a teacher's assistant in Fort McMurray, and it's alleged he committed a number of sexual offenses against 2 students in that city over the past 10 months.  (CTV)

TORONTO - 2 men and 2 youths have been charged in connection with alleged multiple sexual assaults on a 4-year-old girl over several years.  According to the Toronto police sex crimes unit, a now 7-year-old girl from the east end of Scarborough was sexually assaulted multiple times by Toronto brothers Raymond and Martin Savoie and 2 boys also from Toronto between 2010 and 2012.   (CBC)

ORILLIA - Police say there are 8 additional child victims in a sexual assault case that includes accusations of bestiality, conspiracy to kidnap and rape a child, voyeurism and the making of child pornography.  Police have also introduced new allegations that some children were drugged before they were sexually assaulted.  Shayne Lund, 22, of Midland, Ont., has been in custody since October on 110 sex-related charges.  2 female friends of his are also in custody. It is alleged the women helped Lund get access to children between the ages of 2 and 5.  Avery Taylor, 20, is facing 20 charges. ALEXANDRIA, Va. - A Surrey woman has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for travelling to northern Virginia to have sex with 2 children.  Theresa Goddard, 45, was sentenced in federal court. She had pleaded guilty in October to attempting to coerce and entice 2 children into engaging in illegal sexual activity.  (CP)

HINTON - An investigation by ALERT has led to the rescue of a 4-year-old Hinton who had been sexually exploited.  Kenneth McKinley, 52, has been charged with sexual interference and sexual assault as well as making, distributing and accessing child pornography. ALERT's Northern Albert Child Exploitation team began their investigation following a tip from the RCMP National Child Exploitation Coordination Centre in Ottawa.  (CTV)

BATTLEFORD - Paul Leroux, a former dormitory supervisor who has been convicted of sexually abusing boys at a residential school decades ago, has been given a 3-year sentence by a judge in Battleford, SK.  Leroux worked at the Beauval Indian Residential School nearly 50 years ago. Prison term doubled

VANCOUVER - BC's highest court has doubled a prison term to 10 years for an elderly father who sexually abused 3 of his daughters.  Justice Sunni Stromberg-Stein called the original 5-year sentence handed to the man, identified only as K.V.E., "demonstrably unfit," saying it was disproportionate to the gravity of the offences and a substantial departure from sentences imposed in similar cases.  (CP)

Foster care abuse

CALGARY - Police has charged 39-year old Rodney James Marcynuik of Airdrie with sexually assaulting a youth who was once in his care at a family operated foster home.  CPS investigators allege the abuse occurred between June, 2003 and November, 2008, in Calgary and Airdrie while the child lived with Marynuik.  Rodney Marcynuik was arrested on Monday, Sept. 30 and has been charged.  Police believe Marcynuik and his wife fostered 18 children in their home between 2001 and 2010.  (Beacon)   Foster parent charged

OTTAWA - An Ottawa police detective's illegal search caused a man caught with thousands of child pornography images to walk free.  Justin Dufaure had been charged with possessing child porn, but Judge Catherine Kehoe excluded the images after finding cops breached his charter rights.  (QMI)

   

Stunned

SAINT JOHN - News that a former Saint John police officer may have abused more than 260 victims has left many Maritimers stunned.  Investigators now suspect Kenneth Estabrooks sexually abused as many as 263 children.  Allegations against Estabrooks first surfaced in 1975 when he was a 22-year veteran of the Saint John Police Force.  He was sentenced to 6 years in prison and died in 2005 after a battle with cancer.  (CTV)

Interpol issued a warrant in June for Michel Levis, 59, according to a statement from the Dominican national police.  He has been sought by Quebec police since January 2012, when an arrest warrant was issued in the town of La Sarre.  He was stopped on May 30 in the popular tourist city of Puerto Plata.  (QMI)

VANCOUVER - Alleged child sex offender Abraham Kiewiet has been charged with 10 additional counts related to 5 victims.  Police said the alleged assaults on male and female victims between the ages of 12 and 16 took place between 1975 and 1982 when the accused worked as a lifeguard for the Vancouver Park Board.  Kiewiet, 70, is now charged with a total of 22 offences involving 10 victims. 8 counts of indecent assault on a male, 3 counts of indecent assault on a female and 11 counts of gross indecency have been laid.  (CTV)

STATE COLLEGE - Jerry Sandusky has been sentenced to at least 30 years in prison in the child sexual abuse scandal that brought shame to Penn State and led to coach Joe Paterno’s downfall.  The sentence means Sandusky will be in prison at least until he’s nearly 100 years old. SASKATOON - A Lloydminster-area man who was caught sharing a massive child pornography collection has received a 5-year prison sentence.  Shane Dale Pattison, 21, was sentenced after pleading guilty to 53 child porn-related offences.  He had been sharing the images online with more than 400 people, some of whom were actively involved in abusing children.  (CBC)

VANCOVUER - Authorities in BC have laid 10 new charges against convicted sex offender Christopher Paul Neil after conducting investigations into his activities over the past 10 years in Vancouver, Maple Ridge and Cambodia.  Neil became known as the "Swirl Face" sex abuser for digitally altering his face in images posted online, but was identified and arrested in Bangkok in 2007.  The most recent alleged incidents took place in 2013 in Vancouver.  (CBC)

Landmark US verdict

Candace Conti says the abuse began when she was 9 years old, distributing Bibles door to door with a fellow churchgoer, a loud, hulking man named Jonathan Kendrick.  She later learned she was not Kendrick’s first victim, that he had been convicted in 1994 of child molesting. That led to her suing the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York Inc. - the corporation that oversees Jehovah's Witnesses - on the grounds that the elders of her congregation knew of Kendrick’s record and did nothing to protect her.  Last month, in a landmark ruling, a California jury sided with Conti, ordering the Watchtower to pay nearly $25M in damages and Kendrick to pay about $3M.  (Toronto Star)

TORONTO - A former Scout leader and school teacher is facing numerous sexual assault charges involving young boys.  Toronto police said the alleged victims were between the ages of 11 and 15. ROSSLAND - A 17-year-old is facing 47 charges, including numerous sexual offences and child luring.  The youth, who can’t be named because of his age, is accused of using social media to contact children aged 10 to 14 to have them perform sexual acts over their web cameras and arrange face-to-face meetings with them.  Police have currently identified 20 children were involved.  (QMI)

 

 

Mom jailed

TORONTO - A mother who exposed two known child molesters to her 10-year-old daughter for their perverse sexual gratification was sentenced Tuesday to 6 1/2 years in jail. "This was a case like no other," Justice Gary Trotter said in passing sentence on the now 61-year-old first offender, who adopted the 18-month-old girl from Romania in 1997.  Last June a jury found the mother enabled convicted pedophile Randolph "Randie" Bartley, 54, to babysit her daughter between Feb 1, 2005, and Aug 21, 2006.  (QMI)

HALIFAX - A Cape Breton man convicted of sexually abusing boys decades ago has been acquitted of all of the charges against him because of the long delay in bringing him to trial, a judge ruled Thursday.  The Nova Scotia Court of Appeal found that Ernest Fenwick MacIntosh was not brought to trial in a reasonable time after he was extradited from India in 2007 to face the charges that surfaced in 1995 and dated back to the 1970s.  (CP)

LAC LA BICHE - After an investigation in the US lead investigators to his doorstep, a Lac La Biche man is facing charges of child pornography.  ALERT's ICE unit has charged 62-year-old Daniel Quiring Stoesz with possessing child pornography, and making it available.  After some investigation, the ICE unit found the accused is employed by the Government of Alberta, as a foster care supervisor in the Lac La Biche area.  (CTV)

Abuse arrest

VANCOUVER - A man who worked at an Indian residential school in northern Saskatchewan is charged with abusing boys at that institution.  Paul Leroux was a dormitory supervisor at the Beauval Indian Residential School in the 1960s.  He's accused of indecent assaults against 13 boys who attended the school at that time, the RCMP said.  The victims were between 3 and 18 years old at the time.  (CBC)

   

Girl kept rapes secret

CALGARY - Repeatedly raping his daughter - a crime kept secret because the girl didn't want her little brother to lose his dad - has landed a Calgary man a 6-year prison term.  Justice Peter Clark accepted a joint Crown and defence submission which spared the victim having to testify against her father. SYDNEY - An Ingonish Beach man has been sent to prison following a lengthy police investigation that uncovered thousands of images of child pornography.  David Carter Roger Archibald pleaded guilty to 21 counts of making child porn, 14 of distributing it and 1 count of possessing it.  Archibald was sentenced to three years in prison.  (CBC)

VANCOUVER - A former acting teacher at BC's Capilano College has been found guilty of multiple sex offences involving children.  Michael Berry was convicted in BC Supreme Court in Vancouver on 13 sex-related charges dating back to the late 1970s and early 1980s.  The court was told the West Vancouver man befriended girls between the ages of 7 and 13. CALGARY - A Calgary man has been charged with making and distributing child pornography.  The Southern Alberta Internet Child Exploitation Unit was involved in an undercover operation led by the FBI.  Roderick "Kyle" Janssen, 35, has been charged with possession of child pornography, accessing child pornography, making child pornography, and distributing child pornography.  Additional charges are pending.   (CTV)

   

Woman sentenced

BELLEVILLE - A southeastern Ontario woman was handed a two-year sentence for child pornography offences involving her infant daughter.  The woman pleaded guilty on March 1 to sexual interference and producing child porn.  Police allege thousands of pictures of an 11-month-old girl were found on the child's father's cellphone after he lost it last August.  The 24-year-old father, who also lives near Belleville, received a six-year prison sentence in February.  (CP)

   

Clown pleads guilty

'World's largest paedophile ring'

HAGUE - International police led by a UK team say they shut down the largest internet paedophile ring yet discovered.  The global forum had 70,000 followers at its height, leading to 4,000 intelligence reports being sent to police across 30 countries.  The operation has so far identified 670 suspects and 230 abused children.  Detectives say 184 people have been arrested - 121 of them were in the UK. Some 60 children have been protected in the UK.  The three-year investigation, Operation Rescue, was led by investigators from the UK's Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (Ceop).  (BBC)

OTTAWA - He slept with the 14-year-old girl, groomed her 11-year-old sister for sex play and used violence and threats to keep them in line.  On Friday, a judge sentenced Collin Robinson, 33, to 6 1/2 years in prison.  That's on top of a 10-month sentence he received for sexually interfering with their 4-year-old sister while he dated their mother.   (QMI)

LADYSMITH - RCMP say they are overwhelmed by the discovery of about 1M pictures of child pornography found on the computers of a Ladysmith, BC, man.  The 64-year-old was arrested after police executed search warrants at his business, in his car and at his home in the Vancouver Island community.  Officers seized 10 computers and several digital cameras, web cameras, DVDs and 29 hard drives, all containing sexually explicit images of minors.  (CBC)

BARRIE - A Barrie Ont., man who played the role of Santa in the city’s annual Christmas parades was sent to jail yesterday for possession of thousands of images and movies of child pornography.  Daniel Gyselinck, 58, stood in the prisoner’s box with a snowy white beard and long white hair and was taken away in handcuffs after pleading guilty to possession of child pornography as well as making child pornography after he copied it from Limewire onto thousands of CDs.   (QMI)

MONTREAL - Bill Surkis, the former Quebec regional director for B'nai Brith, has pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography.  It's a stunning reversal for the well-respected member of Montreal's Jewish community.  Surkis, 70, was Academic Dean of John Abbott College for 22 years, in addition to being the regional director for the Jewish-rights group B'nai Brith.   (CTV) 

   

Sexual assault arrest

KINGSTON - A man involved with an Ottawa church who was convicted in the past of assaulting more than one dozen choir boys in the Kingston area is charged with another historical sexual assault in Kingston.  Police charged John Gallienne, 65, with indecent assault. Investigators say the allegations against Gallienne date back to 1980.   Gallienne is a former Anglican choirmaster in Kingston, who pleaded guilty to 20 sex crimes against young boys between 1975 and 1990. He was also convicted of three more sex charges involving another boy in 1992.   (CTV)

   

Court overturns conviction

OTTAWA - The Supreme Court of Canada has overturned the child pornography conviction of a Saskatchewan man, after agreeing his rights were violated by an unreasonable search of his home computer.  Urbain P. Morelli claimed his charter rights were violated because his computer was searched by police after a visiting computer technician noticed two suspicious links on his home computer.  In a split, 4-3 decision, the high court acquitted Morelli after ruling police relied on a "carelessly drafted" and "misleading" search warrant.   (CP)

QUEBEC ­- A man convicted of kidnapping a child, raping him and leaving him an empty fuel tank in Levis, Que. said he regrets his actions, though he maintains he has no memory of the events.  Pierre Defoy, 52, said he knows he committed the crimes for which he pleaded guilty to after seeing the evidence against him, and says he believes his victim ³100 %."   Dr. John Wolwertz testified that Defoy's struggles with his sexual orientation, and may have developed amnesia to divert his attention away from his crime.  Wolwertz also said Defoy was at a high risk to re-offend.  (QMI)

   

Mother webcast sex acts

WINDSOR - A judge in Windsor, Ont., is deciding how to sentence a woman who repeatedly sexually assaulted her two-year-old son while live-streaming the acts on the internet.  The woman, who is from Lakeshore, Ont., on Lake St. Clair, was facing 12 charges, but pleaded guilty to five of them, including sexual assault, making child pornography and possessing child pornography. An earlier charge of bestiality was withdrawn.  The woman's name is banned from publication to protect her child.  (CBC)

GANDER, NL - A charge of making child pornography has been laid against a retired RCMP officer who was charged earlier this year with possession of child pornography.  In March, Hank Johnston, 72, of Gander, was charged with possession of child pornography in what the RCMP described as country-wide crackdown on child porn.  (CBC)

Lawyer named

VICTORIA - The Law Society of BC wants the public to know the name of a lawyer who was convicted of sexual exploitation of a minor.  Harold Garrett Power was convicted in May of this year and has since given up the ability to practise law, but a publication ban has until now prevented the society and the media from naming him.  A BC Supreme Court judge has lifted the ban, prompting the law society to send out a news release revealing Power's identity to "protect the public."   (CP)

VANCOUVER - A Lower mainland businessman is offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the man accused of sexually assaulting a six-year-old girl.  Police say the attack happened on Friday evening in the area of 139th Street & 62nd Avenue when the girl was walking home with her brother, 12, and his friend,15. TRENTON - A 14-year-old New Jersey girl has been accused of child pornography after posting nearly 30 explicit nude pictures of herself on MySpace.com - charges that could force her to register as a sex offender if convicted.  Maureen Kanka - whose daughter, Megan, became the law's namesake after she was raped and killed at age 7 in 1994 by a twice-convicted sex offender - blasted authorities for charging the 14-year-old girl.  "This shouldn't fall under Megan's Law in any way, shape or form. VICTORIA - The arrest of a Victoria man for possessing child pornography has sparked investigations in 16 countries.  Matthew Cohen, 21, traded more than 186,000 child pornography images with hundreds of people around the world, Victoria police Det. Ex-youth worker facing sex charges

REGINA - RCMP investigators are looking into the possibility more victims may be identified after announcing that dozens of sexual assault charges have been laid against Ronald Anthony Sawa, a former employee of the Saskatchewan Boys Centre - now known as the Paul Dojack Youth Centre.  Sawa, 58, was arrested by the RCMP Friday morning at his Regina home and taken into custody after a four-year investigation resulting in 39 counts of sexual assault involving 18 complainants.  (Regina Leader Post)

Ex-guard jailed

TORONTO - A judge made it clear he had no patience for the crimes of a former Toronto jail guard and volunteer soccer coach who implored a woman to sexually abuse her grandchildren in front of a webcam.  "Cases involving the use of the Internet as a means of finding, collecting and disseminating child pornography appear in our courts with depressing regularity," Ontario Superior Court Justice David McCombs said before handing Matthew Hughes a 15-month sentence for the possession and distribution of child pornography, charges to which he pleaded guilty in March.  (Toronto Star)

School worker accused

TURNER VALLEY - A host of child pornography-related charges have been laid against an employee at a school on a native reserve south of Calgary.  Turner Valley RCMP launched an investigation on June 13, after "questionable" photos were found near a printer, at Eden Valley School.  Mounties then searched a home on the reserve, finding further evidence of child exploitation crimes.  On June 20, police arrested Leon Rider, a 42-year-old man from the Eden Valley Reserve.  (Calgary Herald)

Man pleads guilty

VANCOUVER - A former BC lawyer with a long history of involvement with children's groups has pleaded guilty to six sexual offences against kids dating back to the 1970s.  Gordon Hazlewood, 73, of Abbotsford, pleaded guilty in North Vancouver Provincial Court to four charges of gross indecency and two charges of indecent assault against boys, who were all under 14 at the time of the offences.  The charges date back to events that happened between August 1969 and November 1977.  (North Shore News)

PEMBROKE - A prominent Ottawa Valley priest whose service to the Catholic Church was rewarded with a Vatican post was sentenced to four years in prison yesterday for sexually molesting 13 young boys.  Reading from a handwritten statement, Msgr. Bernard Prince, 72, showed no emotion as he apologized to his victims for his "legal and moral" wrongdoing after being found guilty of one charge of indecent assault and pleading guilty to 12 more charges of indecent and sexual assault.
