EDMONTON - A luxury home belonging to a former oil-sands executive was set on fire with gasoline bombs, police confirmed.  The blaze on Edmonton's south side caused about $850,000 damage to the home belonging to Jim Carter, former chief operating officer at Syncrude.  (CP)   PREVIOUS:  Home set ablaze   Fire was set deliberately

DNA sample taken

HYTHE - The RCMP seized a fax machine and computers from Wiebo Ludwig's Trickle Creek Ranch on Monday, four days after a court order forced him to surrender a DNA sample.  Though Ludwig hasn't been charged, he now appears to be at the centre of a massive investigation into a series of bombings at En-Cana pipeline facilities near Dawson Creek.  (Edmonton Journal)

KENT, UK - The £12m defences of the most heavily guarded power station in Britain have been breached by a single person who, under the eyes of CCTV cameras, climbed two three-metre (10ft) razor-wired, electrified security fences, walked into the station and crashed a giant 500MW turbine before leaving a calling card reading "no new coal". $50K reward

EUGENE - American authorities have upped the bounty to $50,000 for information leading to the arrest of a former North Vancouver woman, Rebecca Jeanette Rubin.  Rubin, 35, is accused in an arson that caused $26-million in damage to a Colorado ski resort.  She was allegedly a member of "The Family," a radical environmental group affiliated with the Earth Liberation Front and the Animal Liberation Front.  (North Shore News)

Growing threat from eco-terrorists

LONDON - Police have warned of the growing threat of eco-terrorism after revealing they are investigating a group which has supporters who believe that reducing the Earth's population by four-fifths will help to protect the planet.   Officers from a specialist unit dedicated to tackling domestic terrorism are monitoring an eco-movement called Earth First! which has advocates who state that cutting the Earth's population by 80% will ease pressure on other species.    (Guardian UK) 

Court jails blackmailers

MAIDSTONE, UK - Six Greenpeace climate change activists have been cleared of causing £30,000 of criminal damage at a coal-fired power station in a verdict that is expected to embarrass the government and lead to more direct action protests against energy companies.  Five of the protesters had scaled a 200-metre chimney at Kingsnorth power station, Hoo, Kent, in October last year.  They argued that they were legally justified because they were trying to prevent climate change causing greater damage to property around the world.   (Guardian UK)

FORT MCMURRAY - RCMP arrested 11 Greenpeace activists for trespassing at the Syncrude Canada Ltd. Aurora oilsands site at around 12:30 PM Thursday.   The RCMP were called after Syncrude employees found the activists at the tailings pond, Const. Montreal anti-condo group says it planted 'bombs'

Tactical squads were called in and hundreds of people were evacuated from an area near a condo construction site in Montreal, while police investigated six suspicious packages that were designed to look like bombs.  A group opposed to condominium projects in poor areas of Montreal claims to have placed the placed the packages in the east-end neighbourhood on Monday.  (CTV – Jan. 2004)

Animal Rights group calls Biotech Company 'Animal Killers'
