LA LOCHE - Matthew St. Pierre, 29, died after he was shot in broad daylight on a main street in the northern village.  Curtis Randall Eklund, 26, and Richie Keanan Herman, 18, are charged with second-degree murder.

KELOWNA - Damian De Ciantis, 30, was driving erratically and speeding down Benvoulin Road in February 2007 when he lost control and struck two pedestrians.  Kim Black, 51, was tossed nearly 60 metres on impact and died at the scene.

TORONTO - Joey Shepherd can’t remember when he savagely knifed his former common-law wife Ayan “Denise” Osman to death at her Rexdale home and then tried to kill himself.  Shepherd attempted suicide by laying across the eastbound lanes of Hwy. 401 near Dixon Rd in the early morning hours of June 29, 2010 while Osman was bleeding to death at her apartment.   (QMI)

EDMONTON - Police say Jeanne Cathleen Heard's death is considered to be a homicide.  Dwayne Poirier's death has been ruled non-criminal, and the cause of death is also still trying to be determined.  Craig Huber and Brad Winter were also found dead in a house located next door to the one that exploded.  Police say those deaths have been ruled a homicide.  (CTV)

QUEBEC CITY - Retired Quebec judge Jacques Delisle was found guilty of murdering his disabled wife.  Delisle, 77, is believed to be the first Canadian judge to stand trial for murder. He will automatically receive a life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years.  Delisle's wife, 71-year-old Marie-Nicole Rainville, was found dead in the couple's Quebec City condo on Nov. 12, 2009, with a .22-calibre pistol at her side.   (CTV)

TORONTO - A Toronto woman who stabbed her boyfriend to death while he was driving was found not guilty of second-degree murder.  Melissa Lewis, 25, admitted fatally stabbing Jermaine Gillespie, 25, while he drove her, their 6-year-old daughter and father in the city’s west end on May 29, 2010. Arrest made

HAMILTON - Six months after William Staples, 67, and Rhonda Borelli, 36, were last seen at a local convenience store, their decomposed bodies were discovered under a heavy tarp in the flat bed of Staples’ pickup truck, which was parked at Pearson airport.  Hamilton police arrested 47-year-old Mark Staples, of Dundas, Ont., on first-degree murder charges.   (Toronto Star)

MONCTON - Anthony Linfield, 25, was charged with manslaughter, criminal negligence causing death and failing to provide the necessities of life.  Paramedics and the Caledonia RCMP were called to a home in Havelock on Jan. 8 after Dakota Linfield, his 23-month-old daughter, ingested methadone.  (CBC)

SASKATOON - Thirty months in a penitentiary, a $1,000 fine and a two-year driving prohibition hardly seem like serious-enough consequences for Rob Tangeman, the Regina man whose dangerous driving killed 35-year-old Rick Fredrickson and injured three others, Fredrickson's family said.

WINNIPEG - A 68-year-old man from the RM of Dufferin is dead, and his son is facing charges, after the truck they were riding in rolled over at about 10pm on Saturday night.  The man who died was the passenger in the vehicle and his son, a 37-year-old man from Winnipeg, was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing death, police said.   (CTV)

EDMONTON - A teenage ecstasy dealer who sold the pills that led to the death of 14-year-old Cassandra Williams at a West Edmonton Mall event received a 4-month sentence.  The teen, who was 17 at the time of the death pleaded guilty to drug trafficking and breaching conditions earlier this year. WINNIPEG - Lucy Muthoka, 52, pleaded guilty to two counts of dangerous driving causing death, after the more serious charges of criminal negligence causing death were dropped.  On June 29, 2008, two pedestrians, William Halcrow, 57, and James Ross, 58, were killed after being hit by a vehicle at the intersection of Donald St and St. Mary Ave.   (CTV)  

 

 

Mounties fear mistaken identity

CRANBROOK -  A man and a woman who were shot to death in their home near Cranbrook on the weekend may have been mistaken targets in a burgeoning drug war.  The victims of Saturday’s shootings were identified as Leanne Laura MacFarlane, 43, and Jeffrey Todd Taylor, 42.

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE - Jesse Douglas McCullough instead pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death and failing to remain at the scene of a collision.  Court heard McCullough was driving a 1989 Ford Mustang with the headlights off about 7pm on Nov. 7, 2008 when he hit 84-year-old Louie Mekkes as he was walking across a Portage la Prairie street.  (QMI)

CALGARY - Lela Mae La France, 40, sobbed in the prisoner's box as the jury of 9 women and 3 men gave their not-guilty verdict.  La France had admitted from the outset that she had shot Kevin Dunseath, 46, with a sawed-off .22-calibre semi-automatic rifle about midnight on Aug. 9, 2009.

TORONTO - Edward Scheniman pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of second-degree murder in the June 17, 2009, killing of Jimmy Anderson.  He was denied parole 5 times after he pleaded guilty to manslaughter for the August 1990 killing of fellow drifter Stanley Simon George, 27, in the CN Rail Danforth yard.  (QMI)

SELKIRK - The man accused of killing 80-year-old Ralph Larson of Selkirk during a weekend home invasion is a schizophrenic who was previously warned by a judge to stay on his medication after assaulting Larson’s neighbour.  Ryan Otte, 33, was charged with second-degree murder in the death of Larson. KAMSACK - Delbert Warren Whitehawk, 37, pleaded guilty to manslaughter for causing the head injuries that killed Celine Whitehawk on Sept. 21, 2008.  Baby Celine Whitehawk was born addicted to morphine and died just 21/2 months later, by her father's hand, according to the sentencing decision.  Her mother, Lorraine Cote, was in custody awaiting trial at the time.

REGINA - Roland Ruest, 44, was found dead in his home on April 6.  RCMP said that a 22-year-old man was arrested and charged with second-degree murder after turning himself in to police in Medicine Hat.  That followed the arrest earlier in the week of a 19-year-old man.  (CBC)

Double murder

PRINCE GEORGE - Micheal James Bartley, 36,  has already been charged with second-degree murder for the killing of Owen Thompson and attempted murder for the stabbing of a 48-year-old woman.  A day after Thompson, a 48-year-old Prince George man, was discovered dead at a farm in the Clear Lake Saw Mill area southwest of the city, RCMP found a second male body in the woods nearby.   (CTV)   MORE: 2nd victim identified   Death now double homicide

MONTREAL - The charred remains of Yvon Leblanc were found inside the trunk of his torched Mercury Cougar car, discovered in a Longueuil industrial park in May 2008.  The 47-year-old man was identified through his dental records, and police later confirmed he was killed inside his apartment building on Séguin St. in Longueuil.  Authorities arrested a 59-year-old man, his 32-year-old daughter and 29-year-old son, all in connection to Leblanc's death.  (CBC)

Another nameless victim

REGINA - It was a night that ended in tragedy for three teenage friends, leaving one of them dead on the street, his body lit on fire and covered in garbage, and the other two young men behind bars.  The two 17-year-olds charged in the fatal shooting cannot be named because of their ages. The 16-year-old victim also cannot be named under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. 

Plea to lesser charge

WINNIPEG - Travis Arnold Personius, 23, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder as the Crown dropped the more serious charge of first-degree murder.  Tyson Kane Roulette, 25, and Lance Leon Myran, 34, are also charged with conspiracy to commit murder and are set to go on trial next year.  Anthony Woodhouse, 29, was gunned down in September 2007.

WINNIPEG - Ricky Martin Lathlin, 34, died after being attacked at the Gilbert Park housing complex.  Police said Jonathan Boyer, 25, of Winnipeg was arrested and charged. FORT MCMURRAY - It's a brutal trend that has gone on for too long.   Over and over again, Canadians of Somali descent have ended up dead in Alberta as a result of violence.  The latest victims were Idiris Abess, 23, and Saed Adad, 22.  The two men were found dead in a Fort McMurray apartment complex last week. Man turns himself in

MONTREAL - A vehicle struck a lamppost on de la Concorde Blvd. in the Duvernay district of Laval at 2:15am.  Police first believed only the two victims, 22-year-old Leonardo Facchino and 23-year-old Corinne Gauthier Giambona, were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash.   Six hours after the crash, however, a 27-year-old man who was allegedly driving the vehicle turned himself in to police and was placed under arrest.  (CTV)

STOCKTON - Victoria's David Henry Nicholls, 65, was parked on the shoulder of Interstate 5 near Lodi, Calif., reading a map when a speeding BMW plowed into his car on May 2, 2006, sending it into the path of a semi-truck. EDMONTON - Tadeusz (Ted) Jandura was found mentally unfit to stand trial at 3 separate hearings and was determined unlikely to ever be fit to stand trial, confirmed a spokesman with the prosecutor's office in Honolulu.   On Feb. 25, 2007, police arrived at a 13th floor time-share unit at the Ilikai Hotel in Waikiki and found Ingeborg Jandura dead in the suite. WINNIPEG - The words of a dead man helped convict Gordon Okemow of a brutal killing and grisly coverup, a court heard.  Okemow confessed to shooting Nelson House resident Peter Moore two times in the head after learning a suicide note identified him as the killer.
