EDMONTON - A former city bylaw officer who fatally struck a 77-year-old man riding his bicycle in a crosswalk was fined $2,000 yesterday and banned from driving for three months.   Francis Grosvenor, 33, was convicted of making an unsafe left turn under the Traffic Safety Act.  Sandor Baracskay died in hospital as a result of his injuries.  (Sun Media)  MORE:  Fine for unsafe turn

NIAGARA FALLS - Amy Bell, 82, and James Don Mitchinson, 88, were found badly beaten in Bell's Pine Grove Ave. home.   Paul Mellor, a 38-year-old acquaintance of the victims, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder.  (CTV)

Another nameless victim

CALGARY - On Saturday morning police were called to a home in the 6200-block of 31 Ave NW.   When emergency crews arrived they found a 46-year-old man in life threatening condition after being stabbed.   A 17-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with aggravated assault. Suicide note

WINNIPEG - The words of a dead man helped convict Gordon Okemow of a brutal killing and grisly coverup, a court heard.  Okemow confessed to shooting Nelson House resident Peter Moore two times in the head after learning a suicide note identified him as the killer. Okemow, 27, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to 12 years in prison.  (Sun Media)

Brother is suspect

EDMONTON - Bentley-area resident Philip Moore, 55, was shot in the abdomen while hunting with three other men in a section of heavily treed land just northwest of the community.  Herbert Stanley Meister, 57, has been charged with criminal negligence with a firearm causing death.  (Edmonton Journal)

MONTREAL - Kevin Connell’s grieving and outraged family pleaded for police to test the driver of a car that struck and killed the 23-year-old downtown Tuesday for drugs or alcohol.  But the family’s pleas were met with the harsh legal reality that such a tragedy on its own is not reason enough to check whether or not the driver involved was impaired.  (Montreal Gazette)

ST. HALLS BRIDGE, MB - A 22-year-old man is dead after a fatal shooting at the Sioux Valley Dakota Nation during an altercation with an acquaintance Monday, said police.   The Dakota Ojibway Police Service has arrested a 19-year-old man in connection with the incident and say charges are pending.  Police identified the victim as Joseph Dale Edwards Jr., 22, of Sioux Valley Dakota Nation.   (CTV)

Woman faces charges

EDMONTON - Christine Marie Anderson, 22, has been charged with impaired driving causing death, dangerous operation of a vehicle, and having more than 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.  Both the driver and passenger, 20-year-old William Bruce Keogh from Edmonton, were taken to hospital. 'Outsourcing murder'

LONDON - A BBC investigation has uncovered the deadly practice of British Asians travelling to India to hire contract killers.  Family and business associates, who are lured to the sub-continent, are often the targets.  In a country where murder is cheaper and less fraught with risk, the perpetrators of these crimes are rarely brought to justice.   (BBC)

OTTAWA -  Peter Lee, 85, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, six months after an 88-year-old man was found dead in his room at the Peter D. ST. ANDREWS - A New Brunswick man accused of fatally stabbing a newborn in the heart earlier this year has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder.  Rodney Miller entered the plea after the Crown finished its closing arguments and was given an automatic sentence of life in prison with no chance for a parole for at least 25 years.  (CP)

NEWMARKET - Wealthy land developer Jack Heyden, now 66, walked away a free man after pleading guilty to a lesser charge of conspiracy to commit murder.  Heyden, along with his son, Billy Vanderheyden, were convicted by a jury 10 years ago of the first-degree murder of bingo hall tycoon Paul Kneeshaw, who was shot in the back of the head at close range at his Oro farm 17 years ago.  Two weeks ago, the judge gave the same freedom to Heyden's son in an identical deal. (Sun Media)

WINNIPEG - A jury found Mark Edward Grant guilty of second-degree murder for Candace Derksen's death 26 years ago.  Grant, 47, was convicted of leaving the 13-year-old girl, her hands and feet tied, in a shed at a brickyard at the end of November 1984. LONDON, ON - All the Seaborne family of London wants is a few more measly months of justice.  Trying to see that their son's killer, Jonathan Badger, does his full sentence, they've run up against bureaucracy, frustration and even a medical condition known as "broken heart syndrome."  The sentence for their son Terry's killer dropped from a possible 25 years on the first charge, to 7 years on conviction, to 5 years and 9 months on appeal, then to 4 years because of Canada's early release system. WINNIPEG - RCMP have laid charges in a crash that killed a 17-year-old girl in June near Bethany, Manitoba. CALGARY - Police issued a warning that Matthew Adrian Boyes, 38, has been released in the Calgary area from jail.  Boyes served a 6-year manslaughter sentence for killing Huy Quang Nguyen in 2002.  At the time of that killing, Boyes was on parole for another manslaughter where he was sentenced to 8-years behind bars for killing a male prostitute.  (Calgary Herald)
