OPP blunders

HANOVER - The family of Christine Harron, an Ontario teenager who vanished 19 years ago today, recently learned of a string of police errors that allowed the proceedings against a man who confessed to assaulting and killing the teenage girl to be permanently stayed.  In August 2004, a local man named Anthony Edward Ringel, then 36, told his relatives and later that night, the OPP, that he had killed Christine.   (CBC)    MORE:  Confession to murder   Christine Harron

Human remains identified

MONTREAL - Authorities have confirmed that a severed human head found in a city park over the weekend belongs to murdered Chinese student Jun Lin.  A tip led homicide investigators to Angrignon Park, a vast green space in Montreal's south western region, where they found what appeared to be a human head, near a small lake.  (CBC)

TORONTO - Corey Smelie, 23, was sentenced for the 2008 driveby shooting that killed Darnell Grant, 31. The shooting happened on Driftwood Court, near Jane and Finch, on Sept. 22, 2008. Woman jailed

VANCOUVER - On Oct. 5, 2008, 67-year-old Irving Bell was living in Renee Chelsea Leblanc's basement suite.  That afternoon, Bell called 911 and told the dispatcher that he was "getting killed," and then hung up.  Between the call and the time police arrived, Bell had died.

BELLEVILLE - Jennifer Bugg, 31, of Brighton and Andrea Manan, 27, of Frankford, were killed in the crash Dec 20.    Provincial police say 45-year-old Allan Cooney has been charged with two counts of dangerous driving causing death and three counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm.  (CP)

FORT MCMURRAY - Wood Buffalo RCMP responded to a call shortly before 7pm reporting a fight near the corner of Main St and Franklin Ave.  Murder charges were laid against Stacey Ketch, 42, when an autopsy revealed stab wounds as the official cause of death.

TORONTO - Paul Hindle has been sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole for 14 years for the murder of his girlfriend Lisa Lebitka.  Hindle was charged with second-degree murder in January of last year for the murder of Lebitka, 45. CALGARY - Meredith Borowiec, the woman who left 3 of her newborns in a garbage dumpster, has been given 18 more months in jail and faces 3 years of probation.  The 32-year-old gave birth in 2008 and 2009, but the babies' bodies have never been found. IQALUIT - An 18-year-old in Nunavut convicted of murder has received the most serious youth sentencing option available under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.  Justice Sue Cooper granted an Intensive Rehabilitative Custody and Supervision order for the teen, who pleaded guilty in September to shooting 27-year old Lucassie Emikotailuk inside the victim’s home in Sanikiluaq last year.  (CBC)
