died in hospital from injuries suffered in a violent
assault last week. Jason Robert Van Winkle, 34, of the
West Shore, is charged with aggravated assault and is
facing more serious charges in relation to the

from a baseball bat to kill Christy Hands, a violent,
mean man who smoked a pack of cigarettes and drank a
case of beer a day and was addicted to crystal meth.
Sandra Hands, 52, with him for six years
and married for four, had been on the receiving end of
her husband's violent rages many times, but never told
the police.

Saskatchewan is being investigated as a homicide. The
RCMP identified the boy as William Michael Vayro, who
was living with his biological father and stepmother.
Five months ago, the boy's three-year-old sister died on
the same property. Her drowning death was ruled

Homicide clearance rate up
EDMONTON - Police in 2010 solved the
highest proportion of homicides in years, but arrested
more of the city's youth in the process. There were 27
homicides in Edmonton over the year and police solved 22
of them, for a clearance rate of 81%. In 2009,
investigators solved 66%, and in 2008, it was 31%.
