2009 Jack Webster Award Finalists

Jack Webster Award for Excellence in Legal Journalism

Fabian Dawson, Ethan Baron, The Province: Meeting Mr. Big

The National Newspaper Awards Board of Governors has named Vancouver Province senior news editor, Fabian Dawson as the recipient of 2004 Unsung Hero of Canadian journalism.

The "unsung heroes" award recognizes journalists who generally toil in anonymity but are often considered key individuals who make things happen.

The NNA awards are the highest honours in Canadian newspaper journalism.

Dawson's contributions will be recognized when the country's top prizes for journalism  are handed out during the 55th National Newspaper Awards ceremony in Vancouver on Saturday, June 5.

The National Newspaper Awards gala will conclude three days of newspaper-related events, including the Canadian Newspaper Association's Super Conference from June 3 to 4, the Canadian Association of Newspaper Editors June 4-5, and the annual Canadian Press Dinner on Friday, June 4.

Dawson will join other prominent Canadian newspaper personalities from the past and present, including legendary CP photographer Ted Grant and former Vancouver sports columnist Jim Taylor, as presenters of the awards.

Dawson has been cited for excellence in journalism in 2002 and 2003 by the Jack Webster Foundation while many of the stories he has directed have won  journalism awards.

Prime Time Crime has long had an association with Mr. Dawson. We salute him for his work over the years. He was the journalist who broke the Sidewinder story and ultimately the injustice being done to Cpl. Robert Read of the RCMP.

He is one of the few journalists who understands the threat to our society from organized crime and has laboured to counter that threat by educating the public and exposing those who facilitate it.

Mr. Dawson is a regular contributor to Prime Time Crime through his work with the Asia Pacific News Service. We offer him our sincerest congratulations for this prestigious award.

The Province/Calgary Herald investigative team led by Fabian Dawson, has won the 2005 Commonwealth Press Union/Ross Royce Words & Images Award for its series Abandoned brides.

The South Asian Journalists Association announced Province deputy editor Fabian Dawson and writer Michael Roberts as the 2005 winners for a special report on Abandoned brides in India.
